Welcome to the Newman Learning Community Wiki Project, founded by Dr. Max Frazier and the students of Specific Methods of Teaching on Jan. 14, 2008. This ongoing project is an exploration of the concepts and constructs defining contemporary education as envisioned through the Newman University Education Department Conceptual Framework. To that end, the Newman University Education Wiki has been created to house information about techniques and methodology used in today's classroom. The purpose of this wiki is to promote effective instruction through collaborative exploration of research-based classroom practices.

In today's classrooms, teachers are expected to fulfill numerous roles and responsibilities; however, none of those are more important than being a knowledgeable, caring, and reflective educator. Teachers can no longer just stand up in front of a class and lecture for an entire year. Various teaching styles and methods are required to engage the needs of a diverse and active classroom environment. Just as auto mechanics need the right tools to complete a necessary repair on a car, teachers also use a toolbox of techniques and methods for delivering quality instruction to students. An inventive teacher must know when it is right to present a lecture, to ask a probing question, to use cooperative learning, or to try something new. A solid grounding in best practices helps teachers use techniques that are based on proven research and methods that have emerged from years of classroom experience.

We hope the resources found here will be useful to students, teachers, and others who wish to learn more about methods and practices which may be useful in their classroom. Feel free to join our community, share your thoughts and experiences and accompany us on our journey.
